The Hutton Inquiry
& Report. Lord Hutton's inquiry into the
death of Dr David Kelly deserves a place in our Legal
Zone. Reporting by Andrew Gilligan, a BBC reporter on the Today
programme, triggered off a chain of events resulting in Dr Kelly's
suicide and the setting up of the inquiry. Many highly-placed
officials and politicians appeared before Lord Hutton including
defence secretary Geoff Hoon, the ex-journalist and ex-spinster,
Alastair Campbell, and prime minister Tony Blair.
The Hutton Report, published on 28 January 2004, exonerated
the Government and heavily critisised the BBC whose director-general,
Greg Dyke, and chairman, Gavyn Davies both resigned
as a result. Subsequent events have to all intents and purposes
confirmed the Report to be a "whitewash". |
